One thing about winter birding, at least here in north east US, is that although the bird numbers are way down we do get these occasional visitors that grab everyone's attention. This Long-tailed Duck is one such visitor that has been hanging around some open local water for about 2 weeks now. This one is a female and not much of a tail. It is interesting that the Long-tailed Duck used to be called the "Old Squaw" but that name was changed several years ago. We get one of these passing thru every couple of years.
