Long-tailed Yellow Moth

My father-in-law just sent these pictures of this moth. This was sighted in his school in a town in West Bengal. Right now the weather is cold since it is at the foothills of hillstations like Darjeeling (which overlooks the Himalayan range).

These were taken with his cell phone. Even he has never seen this moth before and wondered if it is a rare one.

West Bengal, India

hehe, yes. We (dad-in-law and I) really hope so. :)
Hey! ijust found something even closer than the regular long-tailed yellow moth i found earlier.
Check this out: The Indonesian Moon Moth (said to be very rare)

Getting closer...

Thanks Mahsleb! I was up late last nite chatting with my fther-in-law (FiL) about this.
There is an Indian Moon moth (Indian Luna Moth - Actias Selene) but it is green in colour and the shape is nowhere near to this one.
Then there is the Malaysian Moon Moth (Actias Maenas), which comes close but the shape is just not the same. The Indonesian one is the closest and its sighting in India is perplexing. Migration? The site above, says it feeds on Mango-family trees. I must find out about the habitat in that town...

My FiL's friend said he had visited a nearby butterfly/moth museum and hadn't seen this particular one in their collection.

What's stranger is, Wiki has a page on the Actias genus. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Actias
But it does not have this particular one in its list. Damn!! Wish we had a better shot to display.
Thanks again for ur comments! :)

Its Actius maenas, on its nothern distrubution limit, its common in the Malaysian peninsula, but it would breed in the evergreen tall forest on the lower northern slopes of the himalayas similar to the ones you drive through to get to Darjeeling. They are frequently blown large distances , especially males searching for females. Good find wish id been there to see it!!
