Looking down on the arroyo - Spiney-tailed Iguana (Ctenosaura hemilopha)

Growing up to 36", these Baja iguanas tend to take over a woodpecker nest site, usually in a Cardon Cactus. This pair had their location high above the arroyo I was camped in. Not being early risers, every morning about 9AM they would poke their heads out, climb up on the top of the cactus and survey their kingdom!! At the first sign of danger, like a passing falcon, they would dash back in, way quicker than I would ever have thought possible for that big a lizard!

Must have been pretty cool watching them on the run. Now do they help themselves to bird's eggs? You can answer me here and I'll keep an eye out ;)

A beautiful image of this quite large Iguana ;)

KC, while they are primarily herbivores, they have been know to eat small mice, as well as eggs! The Juveniles tend to eat quite a few insects, but as they grow, their diet leans toward plants!

Last week, I got a photo of the largest, and certainly the oldest I have every seen. I will post it tomorrow. This one was well over 40"
