magic (Dendrocopos major)

how does the woody get a whole peanut out from behind the mesh ? He's hanging upside down to reach the bottom of the feeder where my least favourite visitors, the squirrels, had bitten through the metal, hence the additional not very elegant wire. He can reach the gap, they cant.
We have only seen the female so far; for the last few days the male has been on duty.

Lol, a magical female indeed. Looking at that mesh then the peanut she is clutching in her bill does not seem to equate. Outstanding picture Max! TFS!
