Handsome little fellow! Great capture! Until very recently I thought these were summer visitors because I'd only ever seen them in spring or summer. In common with a lot of others, during lockdown I've been out walking much more and I've been photographing them on local farmland all through the winter.

HI DJR Whittle,

I was under the impression they tend to head for coastal areas, where it's a bit warmer, during the winter; but apart from that most spend winter in Britain. Perhaps recent mild winters have led to them changing their habits, but they certainly will have felt this one. I head to the coast every now and again because I like to see them and I'm always pleased to see they're surviving the winter, although I didn't see the female today and usually they're joined at the hip: hopefully she was around somewhere.
