Maned Duck
This is an adult male. Our field guides called this bird the "Australian Wood Duck" but Clements and most other authorities use "Maned Duck." Males have a narrow black "mane" down the middle of their nape. Seeing these birds grazing reminded me of small geese. In fact they are sometimes called "Maned Geese." However genetic studies have found they are more closely related to Shellducks than they are to geese. They are in their own genus endemic to Australia.
