I think that's the White Stork you are thinking about. This one's more likely to steal your babies!
They are ugly I guess, but then again as Kipling says, "Nature's red in tooth and claw." They clean up the mess. That used to be animal carcasses, but now includes man made rubbish dumps etc. Especially for this town bird.
