Maroon-chested Ground-Dove (Claravis mondetoura)

One of the most difficult of widespread neotropical species. The last and only time I saw this species was in 1994! After hearing about a calling bird on the road to Irazu Volcano, two friends and I visited the site with success. We never would have found it if it wasn't calling and had to hike up a steep slope at 3,000 meters elevation but as can be seen, the efforts paid off.

I just love the way his eye is looking through the natural frame of branches to look at you Patrick LOL.

A super picture of the Gallery first - very well done. It's off to Opus - many thanks.

Congratulations Patrick! I have yet to see this one but every trip I make to Costa Rica it goes on my to see list (lol). Excellent!!!!

Thanks for the comments. Yes Stanley, a really tough one. It's on the wanted list for most birders who even live in CR and many tour guides who do lots of tours in the neotropical region. If this one hadn't been nice enough to call over and over, we never would have seen it.
