Our Lesvos adventures start during early May, which means that we either normally get distant views of this species or they have restarted their migration and moved on.
Fortunately this individual lingered into early May, on a seasonal pool adjacent the main arterial road on the island.
The traffic noise was therefore a distraction to the wading birds, allowing me to view this elegant wader at reasonably close quarters.
By the second week of May, following a fortnight of high temperatures, the pond became a bowl of baking mud and the waders had moved on ( except for a few stilts).
