A bird I always hoped to get a close-up of but didn't really expect to. We spotted this one in the distance and stopped to take a few shots. It didn't fly off so we drove closer ,shot some more, closer and closer until we were virtually beside it, maybe 70 metres or less. After taking our fill (a lot) of shots we drove off and it was still there; incredible opportunity.
The largest eagle in Africa, the Martial eagle weighs in at almost 14 pounds (6.5 Kg.) and has a wingspan of about 6 feet 4 inches (2mtrs). It is 32 inches (1mtr) long. Birds as large as a European Stork are recorded to have fallen prey to the Martial Eagle. Animals as large as an Impala calf are taken, and some monkeys, also occasionally young domestic goats, and lambs.
