Melnik, Bulgaria
The past weekend was rather suitable for a longer walk. This time I traveled to SW Bulgaria where sand pyramids have overtaken the landscape. The significant Mediterranean climate was a precondition for a few good birds: Subalpine Warblers, Alpine Swift, Sombre Tit, Red-rumped Swallow and a few other more common birds like Black Woodpecker, Corn Bunting, Cuckoos and Nightingales. Half an hour birding from the balcony of my hotel produced over 20 species including the Black woodpecker and the Alpine swift

Great goodness Dancho... you really did see a great selection of birds, didn't you.

What stunning scenery this is - very well presented too; many thanks.

Thank you both. Yes the area is fantastic. In spring you get to see a few good birds like Olive-tree Warbler, Rollers, Levant Sparrowhawk, Rock Sparrow, Eastern Orphean Warbler, Semi-collared Flycatcher, Eastern White-backed Woodpecker, Eastern Black-eared Wheatear, Rock Nuthatch + some waterbirds like Dalmatian Pelican, Pygmy cormorant and Glossy ibis. A week in the area can be rather productive.
