Messy Eater (Sitta europaea)

This Nuthatch was throwing out more seed than he was eating. Is that selective feeding or what?

I don't tend to see nutters gleaning seeds on the ground under our feeders, so I doubt he's tossing them down for later. My guess would be he's being picky - grabbing the first seed at the opening each time, but tossing it away if it isn't his favorite kind. My Mom found that it all worked out for the best - the picky ones tossed some types of seeds overboard, then the ground feeders came for those and she got more diversity in her garden |=)|
