Montagu's Harrier
The melanistic formof this species are quite rare and very interesting to catch up with. Last year during the autumn migration on The Strait of Gibraltar, there was an opportunity to watch roosting birds (over 80 Monty's) at La Janda, seven or eight were this lovely melanistic or darker form. The strong easterlies had been blowing for over a week and we had pockets or build ups of various raptors unable to cross over to Africa on their southbound journey. A great time to see each group if you know where they roost! More info here: http://birdspain.blogspot.com/2011/09/melanistic-montagus-harriers-at-la.html
