Mountain Bluebird
This is a male. They are scarce winter visitors to our area but regular in small numbers in the foothills around the Central Valley from breeding grounds in the interior Mountain West. They tend to be grayer and less intensely blue in the winter. The male's sky-blue coloration is variable, created not by pigment but a structural color formed by refractive feather microstructures.

Fairfield, California, USA.

Sialia currucoides
What a lovely smokey blue colour! Really interesting re the feather structure, which is what gives it such a luminous subtle glow rather than a flat colour.

What a lovely portrait of this handsome chap, Joseph.
