Mouth breather (Corvus frugilegus)

I took the shortcut through the cemetery on my way home. No nutcrackers there yet, and they may never come as the other corvids have already finished off most of the pine cones. Anyway ... this Rook caught my attention for a bit, walking about with his beak open. He did have the ability to shut it, but didn't do so very often or very long. And it wasn't a hot day either, so I don't think he was panting to lose heat.

Maybe gaping airborne insects just above the grass, is my guess. Great image with good detail, not easy with all monochrome subjects, well done.

LOL perhaps he thought if he kept his mouth open someone might pop some food in it!!!

A lovely picture - he really looks rather sweet.

Maybe he thought that by having his beak open the wife would think he is about to Speak? Hence anything for a quiet life! Nice photo TFS.

Beautiful feather detail and feather sheen in this great photo Doc.

i see juvenile birds do this when they eat something that is hard to go down and only see adults do it when they have just fed their youngsters unless the bird is ill.you always get me thinking ann not a bad thing.all the best margaret.

Terrific capture of this Rook out for a stroll, Doc! Has a lot of charm, maybe due to the open beak.
