My local rarity
The last Goldfinch I saw was when I was with Peter and Adrienne in South Australia would you believe! That was in October 2019!! Ok we've been locked down more-or-less since I got home from there so not a lot of birding done.

However, I very, very, rarely see them in the garden. And I believe this is the first time I've seen any at Kinnordy. Probably wrong place, wrong time LOL.

But within minutes of me topping up the feeders this one arrived.... followed shortly after by another. I may show you that one as well, if you're good LOL

Nice one Delia. I'm up in Stonehaven and see Goldfinches on a daily basis this time of year.
As an aside - I've got a Nikon Coolpix B500 but what's Birdwatching mode?

Hi BM

I don't know your camera, but I've Googled it.

You have some pre-programmed scene modes on your camera

Scene Mode

1: Portrait. Use for portraits with soft, natural-looking skin tones
2: Landscape. Use for vivid landscape shots in daylight.
3: Child. Use for snapshots of children. ...
4: Sports. Fast shutter speeds freeze motion for dynamic sports shots in which the main subject stands out clearly.
5: Close up. ...
6: Night Portrait.

Nikon change these on occasion. On my P900 there's quite a lot more, but no Sports Mode (which I've used on other cameras when birding). Instead there's a dedicated Birdwatching mode.

I'm not really a photographer... just can't keep in my head what settings I should use and by the time I'd got something set, the bird would be gone LOL.

You can do multiframes (7 I think) while the shutter is depressed and you can change the EV setting. Not sure, but I think you can use the flash (I've never done so).

The camera does everything else. Suits me fine LOL

Thanks Delia, I thought your model was going to be slightly more sophisticated but I think your right and the nearest on mine would be Sports mode which should give a faster shutter speed for moving objects. I've only had this camera for a few weeks but have found the continous shot mode (yet to use it though) and will get a bit more adventurous as time goes on.
