Nessus Sphinx Moth
Nessus Sphinx Moth (Amphioxus floridensis: Sphingidae) This moth has a wingspan 3.7-5.5 cm (1.4-2.2 in). I could not get a clear picture of this moth so after taking a couple shots. I decided I would move the leafs covering its head. I never got close to the leafs and this moth took off to parts unknown with no forwarding address. Photographed in Camelot Park, Bryan, Brazos County, Texas, USA. Woodland north side of the park dominated by hackberry/elm/oak with some juniper at ca. 94 m (310 ft) elevation.

What a lovely colour he is - reminds me of port wine ;)

A super picture this one Stanley.

"I decided I would move the leafs covering its head." You didn't really think that would work, did you? ;) Great capture, Stanley; I bet you don't move (or breathe) next time something similar happens ;)

Very strange-looking family, the Sphinxes. Thanks to your posts of them, if I ever see one, I'll know the general type of moth I'm looking at. Good close-up of this one, even without its "face".

Hi Stanley,

Great shot. I will keep one eye open for your Sphinx Moth here in Kent.lol

Cheers

Ian
