New lifer - Hazel grouse (Tetrastes bonasia)

Stupendous - the last Hazel Grouse I saw was also it’s rear end after combing through dense forest for several hours. 🙂

I have another shot of it's body when it was flying away. Since it's the first time I saw this one, I had to check with Merlin and the app said it's a hazel grouse. I'm guessing they based that on the tail bands.
Can it be a female black grouse, by any chance? I'm just confirming my species ID.

It’s a female Hazel Grouse - note the speckled throat and white borders round it - (male has a black throat) also the long white braces on the back and subterminal dark tail band cf to Black Grouse 👍

Oops I should have said CONGRATULATIONs! 🍷

I was thrilled when I had my first one.

Thanks!!! 18000 steps and going up and down several small hills paid off today. I may have also seen a Goldcrest next to it (another lifer, or atleast that's what it looked like based on size and color, couldn't focus through the branches)
