North Island Takahe (Porphyrio hochstetteri)

On a visit to bird-Island Tiritiri Matangi (near Auckland) these two very rare Takahe's passed me. There are just less then 200 of these impressive birds left and only 18 of them live on this island.

A beautiful photo of these wonderful stumpy little birds Jack. They are so similar to Swamp Hens, yet so different - thanks for sharing them.

I like you got both of them walking in synchronization. Also I am personally interested that both of them are without leg bands. Wild born?

Wonderful! First I'd heard of these rare beauties was on Sir David Attenborough's Life of Birds. A charming photo, is this a hen teaching her chick how to forage? Thanks for the view.
