Another first in my yard! The onset of spring in Connecticut is bringing back our migrating friends, in this case a Northern flicker (one of the few woodpeckers that actually migrate). They inhabit the typical habitat of any woodpecker but are often seen foraging on the ground for insects, which I will be on the lookout for. I've never had them in the yard before, but the combo of recent hurricanes/severe storms have resulted in a lot more dead trees around me than ever, so hopefully I can see more of them and other cavity-nest builders. Northern flickers are indigenous to most of North America, but migrate as far south as central South America.
