Northern Flicker
Formerly split under the name Yellow-shafted Flicker, this eastern woodpecker was combined with the western Red-shafted Flicker with both lumped into the Northern Flicker in 1982. There is a hybrid zone extending from Alaska to Texas where intermediate birds are found. The two former species are currently divided into two subspecies groups based on their appearance. This is a female of the "Yellow-shafted" group showing no mustache, tan face, red nape patch and yellow undertail. The subspecies found in New Jersey is the larger "C. a. luteus."
