Northern Harrier (Circus hudsonius)

Got quite close (50 feet or so) to these magnificent creatures on my recent visit to the coast. There is still some coastal prairie land around Palacios, TX and these harriers are on constant patrol. I've yet to see one light. They make quick dives when something is spotted, but come right back up, usually empty beaked. They are extremely difficult (at least for me) to get a good focus on. These photos don't do them justice--they are absolutely gorgeous with the naked eye up close.

They are indeed hard to capture in flight. Not a bad effort, this one, though, so don't give up |=)|
