Northern Mockingbird (Mimus polyglottos)

Yes, this is the feathered friend that you see in my avatar.

The Northern Mocker is one of my favorite local species, mostly due to its astonishingly vast learned vocabulary. Adult males can easily render upwards of 100 different phrases. On one occasion, I was able to digitally record 20 minutes of chatter from a single individual. I easily differentiated 47 distinct calls, including Blue Jay, Red-shouldered Hawk, and what I believe to be a cordless power drill!?!

They happen to be the least timid of the shrubbery creatures in my yard, as I can often step within 10 yards of one with lens in hand. I will also routinely witness them aggressing perched raptors who are obviously too close for comfort. Whether no brains, or no fear, they are a stout territorial breed.

I must say, they are a unique addition to the neighborhood. I feel privileged to share permanent residence with this species.
