Northern Pintail (male and female)

Northern Pintail (male and female) (Anas acuta)

Taken at the Martin Luther King Jr. Regional Shoreline at over 100m.

This is a composite of two shots. I couldn't decide which one I liked best so I put them together. The top horizontal pair (close together, wings up) is one photo, the lower pair (wings down) is another. The two shots were directly in sequence when I shot the burst.

Eeee.... I'm doing well with Pintail pictures today.... many thanks for this great flight shot Calvin.

(they're my favourite duck you know)

No flight shots are easy with a Superzoom; great capture of the two in flight, Kevin... I can't see the join either ;)

Wonderful focusing and lighting and very clever to put two shots together so seamlessly.

You'd be seriously squee-ing being here. I see at least 4 pairs of Northern Pintails every time we go out. They are one of my favorites too and fun to photograph. Even the females are pretty, with those leopard-like feather patterns.

Confession: I've been using Photoshop since Version 2, so a blend like this was easy (especially with such cooperative sky conditions). Which is why I always make a point of clearly stating when the image is a 'shop job. I try to avoid Photoshop otherwise outside of tonal and sharpening edits...I leave the color, setting, focus blur, and bokeh to whatever the camera gives me for that "this is exactly what I saw" feeling.
