Could you include the date of when you photographed this, and if it is in city or rural area? Might help in narrowing down the possibilities.

Looks like a female Purple Finch to me which incidentally, I'm waiting on down here. Could you hurry them along please? ;) Nice shot!

Good ID Foggin, I think that Foggin is right... Looks like a Purple Finch (Carpodacus purpureus). Just love thumbing through the field guide for a mystery bird! Thanks!
