On a rare trip to town - 1
We don't usually see the Nutcrackers outside of their pinenut harvesting season, July-September, with a bit of an extension into October when they come back for pinenuts they've put in temporary storage in soft ground. The rest of the year they stay well hidden deep in the woods on the hills around town. This one didn't seem to be looking for his/her pinenut stores, so I don't know what brought her/him down from the hills. Or maybe s/he did come for nut stores but found the ground frozen and had given up. Anyhooo ... I got a few decent shots. Couldn't decide which of the best two to share - the dramatic red one or the well lit one - so I'm sharing them both.
