Put this for general interest, I believe they are Honey Bees. I have never in this country see an open Bees nest like this and rather strange as there has been talk of very few Honey Bees around this year.

Why didn't you you get in really close with a macro lens, would have given you a great Buzz!!
 
2006 and 2007 we had them in our garden. They kept building nests like this attached to various shrubs. No problems with them You could walk up to them and sit in the garden without any hassle. No sign of any this year though.
