Pacific Golden Plover (Pluvialis fulva)

I found this early arrival, known in Hawaii as kolea, in Kapiolani Park south of Waikiki. It is just beginning to take on its breeding plumage and will have a very striking black, white, and speckled brown appearance later in the winter.
