Painted Turtle (Chrysemys picta)

The Painted Turtle is the most widespread native turtle in North America. Its name comes from the bright yellow and red markings as seen here. Three or four regionally based subspecies are recognized. This one is the Midland race "C. p. marginata" characterized by a shadow mark on its plastron.
