Pavons Mallow (Pavonia cancellata: Malvaceae) This plant stood about 1 m (3.3 ft) tall with flowers about 5 cm (2 in) across. Near Liberia, Guanacaste Province, Costa Rica. Disturbed roadside in dry tropical forest at ca. 82 m (270 ft) elevation. Afternoon setting sun.

Okay, awake now and I couldn't, for the life of me, remember the name of our counter-part - The Hibiscus ;) which I love.
 
I think you and I both need a bumpersticker 'I stop for birds and wildflowers'. Or were you walking along that road? Glad you stopped however you were traveling. Lovely flower I would otherwise never have seen.
