You know this is the first picture to come in for this guy for nearly 7 years! Any chance you could help me out... the Opus picture looks much browner and I can't see any red on its head... is that a female and/or a different subspecies?
Delia welcome to the intricacies of Philippine birds. I am no expert but the field guide describes three sub-species of this endemic and as far as I know this is the maculatus sub-species which is inter alia characterised by the male having this red "v" on its nape; the female lacks the red and I will post a shot of it in the next few days.
