Pine Siskin, One of Many!! (Carduelis pinus)

One of the 50+ Pine Siskin/Goldfinch flock feasting in backyard today.. This one a male. I just read an article on line saying that when the seed crop in the Boreal Forest, (Northern US mountains and Canada) is lower the Pine Siskins flock and move further south. This is obviously one of those years!!

Great capture! It is an irruption year indeed and lucky for us! It seems so strange to me to have gone from never seeing one here to having flocks of 100 or more birds.

Yes, this is an irruptive year for the siskins.
 
You guys are lucky to get these large flocks this year! I've yet to see one at all. Great catch and story, Ken! :t:
