Pipet possibly a BuffBellied/American Pipit ? Now fairly convinced that it (Anthus r.japonicus)

This bird seems identical to one reported on the Rare birds site in Cheshire, However I took this picture in St Pauls Bay, Malta last week. Others have ID it as a BuffBellied/American Pipit, initially I thought it was a meadow Pipet but having compared photographs I am comming to the conclusion that this may be an extreame rarity for Malta but I would welcome any assistance in positively identifying this bird
Habitat
Rocky shore line
Date taken
19.11.2018
Scientific name

Have no idea having never seen a Pipit in my history of birding but I can tell you this is a beautiful image.

The ID forum may be able to help. Fabulous picture, someone that knows pipits should be able to help. Good luck with it David!

I saw your thread in the ID forum David, and see they have come down for Red-throated Pipit, which according to my research is a Passage Migrant and uncommon winter visitor, so seem more likely for a pipit in Malta.

A super picture this lad - very well done.

Actuall Delia, Ive been doing some research and I too dont think its an american Buff bellied pipit but its an exact fit for a Siberian Buff-bellied Pipit which is a rare visitor to the middle East and therefore quite likely to pass through Malta. Siberian Buff-bellied Pipit Anthus r.japonicus
