Platypus - One of Australian Birding's Collateral Benefits (Ornithorhynchus anatinus)

One of the benefits of birding is that it gets you out into the world - with all its tragedies, happiness and surprises.

While I was watching some Brown Thornbills on a quiet riverbank not too far from home, this fellow decided to come up for air almost directly below where I was standing. Totally unexpected - I wasn't even thinking about platypus especially as it was the middle of the day and quite warm.

He didn't hang around - was moving downstream on the current and spent most of his time underwater - but I managed to get this one shot. I've seen wild platypus (not often) before but this is the first time I've ever managed a photo of one. Made my birding day - even if I did only get lousy pics of the Thornbills!
