This hawk has been seen in our yard on several occasions but this time it got a pigeon off our roof as it's prey. The hawk began to pluck feathers and toss them aside to get to the side of the pigeon where it began to eat the flesh. I've had several people try to ID this but no one agrees.

I'm not an expert but I don't think it can be but a Sharp-shinned Hawk (Accipiter striatus). Whatever it is, lucky you to have a beautiful raptor in your backyard! o:) Thanks a lot for sharing it!!! :t:

We've ruled out a Cooper Hawk as they squeeze their prey and this bird did not do that. It could be a Red-Shouldered Hawk or a Harrier Hawk. Both are in our area.

It looks like the Florida variant of the Red Shouldered Hawk, to me. The head is light gray in the Florida strain.

Did you know there is a forum dedicated to IDs? You'll have the best luck posting it there. It is at: http://www.birdforum.net/forumdisplay.php?f=114

Nice shot, BTW.
