Possibly orphans
Doc Duck

Possibly orphans (Cygnus olor)

Our evening excursion that day was out to a lake off an even smaller channel nearby. One sad thing we saw there was a dead swan. By the way it was lying in the water, it looked like it might have gotten tangled in a fishnet and drowned. Just outside the mouth of the lake we saw these five cygnets jostling for spots on the bank. I wonder if they may have been the orphans of the dead adult we'd seen in the lake. I hope they were big enough to manage on their own.

I hope that wasn't the case but I suppose it is one of nature's raw moments.

One would hope not Ann, even so they should have another parent and they look a size more capable of looking after them selves. Fingers crossed.

Those cygnets are quite well grown so hopefully fend for themselves, let's hope so. By the way Ann, your cygnets I'm pretty sure are Bewick's (Cygnus columbianus). Tfs.
