Pre-dawn crane preening

Pre-dawn crane preening (Grus canadensis)

I guess we all take some care with our appearance at the beginning of the day. Gotta be sure you don't go off to work with bed hair, or laddered stockings, or (every schoolchild's nightmare) having forgotten to dress ;)

BTW, I noticed someone asked on ID Forum recently about a brown Sandhill Crane at the Bosque that week. Consensus among the forum's experts was that the orangey-brown spots, patches, even full plumage, are results of iron-stained water from iron-rich soil where the bird has spent some time.

And now to catch up on some browsing.

LOL Ann... yeah .... it's important to look right before the guys can see you, isn't it!!

Another good early morning image you've got here - well done girl.

Interesting the Scots/Norse language, isn't it. I guess the Drukket one just got changed to mean wet eventually. I can't think of a Scots word for 'drunk' that would look anything like a Norwegian word.... the most common one here is 'hammered', but there's loads of others.

I'm surprised the camera was able to focus with that light and the negative exposure compensation
