Pre-dawn crane preening

Pre-dawn crane preening (Grus canadensis)

I guess we all take some care with our appearance at the beginning of the day. Gotta be sure you don't go off to work with bed hair, or laddered stockings, or (every schoolchild's nightmare) having forgotten to dress ;)

BTW, I noticed someone asked on ID Forum recently about a brown Sandhill Crane at the Bosque that week. Consensus among the forum's experts was that the orangey-brown spots, patches, even full plumage, are results of iron-stained water from iron-rich soil where the bird has spent some time.

And now to catch up on some browsing.
