Licensed banders capture birds with nets (with no harm to birds) and measure them, weight them, note the location, etc. Then they are released. If they are ever caught again, they can research the band markings and find out all kinds of helpful info about the birds. (migration, health, growth, etc.) Sometimes, the bird doesnt have to be even captured, if they are spotted and the band notations and color codes can be seen and reported.
