Purple Swamphen, First Winter (Porphyrio poliocephalus)

The Purple Swamphens are beginning to expand their territory. Previously they were only seen in the Pembroke Pines area. Now they are at Wakodahatchee Wetlands.

It is in the same family as the Purple Gallinule, but is a separate species. The Purple Gallinule is native to North America but the Purple Swamphen is native to Africa. A flock has been established in southern Florida.
