Purple Swamphen
I remember as a young man looking at these in my Birds of Britain and Europe bird guide and thinking how exotic they were. Here we see them so often they can be overlooked!

yes we do tend to overlook common species but my common and your common are totally different.great to see and brilliant capture.all the best margaret.
 
yes, they are as common as mud in my area, but I still take photos of them as they are big and for me, easy to see and focus on. This is a great shot, love the dull coloured background showing of the SH beautifully.
 
Still a lovely photograph of the Purple Swamp Hen (Maori name for this bird is Pukeko), they are very common around here at the present.
