Pygmy Nuthatch (Sitta pygmaea)

They usually prefer to forage on tree trunks and pine cones, only occasionally descending to the ground. Compared to adults, juveniles such as this are paler overall with a grayish crown (not brown) and yellowish mandible. This resident of Western North America has a patchy distribution usually associated with pine, but along the West Coast they have expand their range adapting to a variety of wooded habitats including introduced Eucalyptus.
