Red Bellied Woodpecker (Melanerpes carolinus)

Had this very unusual guest drop in my yard in the winter of 2015. Although it's not unheard of to see one here, they are very rare in these parts. We are outside the northern range of these birds. I had never seen one before, and I have not seen one since. This one came almost every day for about 3 weeks. Sure wish it would come back!

OMG!!! You really managed to take a super picture of this rarity to your yard Bill (I'd have been shaking too much LOL)

Many thanks for trawling your archives to showing him to us too. I hope you see another one come in before too long.

A beautiful closeup image of this male Red-bellied Bill and so nicely captured guy!

Interesting I didn't know they didn't come up there. I hardly ever see the Red-headed woodpecker anymore unless I go to Caw-Caw Interpretive Center in Ravenel, South Carolina.

A wonderfully colourful shot of your unusual visitor, Bill.
