Red Crossbill (Loxia curvirostra)

It was a lifer for me, and obviously I was happy to see them. I did not even hope to get a picture of them. They stay at the top of the Pine trees, but can be seen on the ground early in the morning, picking grit. The lighting was pretty bad but I take any condition when it comes to a rare Bird.
Habitat
Northern Pine forest
Location
Algonquin P.P. Ontario
Date taken
2007-01-04
Scientific name
Loxia curvirostra
Equipment used
Canon 20D 500/4.0 1.4x TC
Great image, but there is no such thing as a Red Crossbill! This is a MALE CROSSBILL, as your scientific name suggests. Well done!

Excuse my ignorance about the naming - just checked an international field guide with names in 7 languages, and saw that they were called Red Crossbill in American english. And thanks Mark for pointing it out too. I guess the females are still green though...??

Great capture,Karl. Its always nice to see a crossbill and this is a very good one. I was just going to upload an old digiscoped one I found, lucky I didnt, its much nicer looking at yours.

Karl, I am just a bit jealous! I have literaly just got back from a few days up in the Northern Woods of NH and ME...loads of White-winged and a couple of these - but none down low at all :( Great shot and congrats on the tick!

Hans, I think you will find that they are called Red Crossbill on this side of the pond...
