Red-faced Malkoha, Female, Sinharaja, Sri Lanka

Red-faced Malkoha, Female, Sinharaja, Sri Lanka (Phaenicophaeus pyrrhocephalus)

Only 1 pair seen of Red-faced Malkohas, feeding together, high in a tree at Sinharaja, Sri Lanka, at the outer edge of the rainforest.
They were very hard to see and photograph, due to dense foliage.
This photograph shows the white eye of the female.
I could not get a photograph which showed the whole of either bird.

It sure is colorful for a female and nicely captured amid the vegetation

What a wonderful start you've made to your Gallery with this malkoha, quite a scarce sight for us in the Gallery too.

This would appear to be the first image of a female to come in, so I'll upload it to The Opus shortly, many thanks for sharing it with us Carol.

I'll look forward to seeing some of your pictures.

Thank you for your kind comments KC, Delia and Kits.

Yes, I noticed that the Opus only had 2 other photographs of this species, Delia, so thought it might be helpful to have it in the Opus, if you wished to include it

Kind regards, Carol

Thank you for your kind words, Stanley.

Yes they are a fabulous species to see.

I was thrilled when I saw the pair. They were not with a feeding flock and it took some searching to find them, in hot, humid conditions in the Sinharaja Rain Forest.

The way that the light caught their plumage was magical, but they were very tricky to photograph, lol !

Kind regards, Carol

Thank you, Mali.

I enjoy seeing your photographs and have been following and commenting on your work, on Twitter, for some time now 🙂
