Red-Winged Black bird (male) (Agelaius phoeniceus)

Male Red-wings call, droop their wings and flare the red epaulet while making a slight bow. One would thing that this is for the benifit of the females, but it is directed at other males. You will see several males, during the breeding season, all gathered and making this display and vocalization. Sometimes the females no where to be seen. This can go on for quite some time. I is also the time to get images: the birds will not be as wary on approach. On this day this was the only male to be found at the Butterbredt Spring. I had spent many other excursions trying to capture this bird: then this one, lone individual puts on this show, and I only to aim and shoot. Go figure.

Great detail on this difficult-to-shoot bird! This guy is actually very dauntless - they attack even the crows!
