Red-winged Blackbird
This is an adult female of our local resident subspecies A. p. mailliardorum (Bicolored Blackbird) characterized by their mostly dark unstreaked belly and undertail coverts. They are almost identical to female Tricolored Blackbird (P. tricolor) but may be distinguished with care by the Tricolored's thinner, more narrow bill. At this time of year, both species have started nesting and the appearance of the associated males can help with identification of the females.
Location
San Pedro Creek Mouth, Pacifica, California, USA.
