This is an adult male of our local resident subspecies A. p. mailliardorum (Bicolored Blackbird). The male's median wing coverts are mostly black (not yellow), so when not displaying, it shows very little color. When the lesser coverts (epaulets) are exposed by raised scapulars during display, the red color is visible as seen in this video.
Location
San Pedro Creek Mouth, Pacifica, California, USA.
Date taken
09 April 2021.
Scientific name
Agelaius phoeniceus
Equipment used
Canon SX70 HS
