Respendent Quetzal C-RICA SER 2
I photographed this male bird in early daylight in the San Gerardo de Dota montane cloud forest area of Costa Rica. it was in a tree about 50 m distant from the roadside location of my tripod, in a pasture with scattered wild avocado trees. A much less ornate female was in a nearby tree. The birds feed on the fruit of wild avocado and related tree species, swallowing the whole fruit and dispersing the seeds.
Habitat
Treed pasture surrounded by montane cloud forest
Location
San Gerardo de Dota
Date taken
15 December 2015
Scientific name
Pharomachrus mocinno
Equipment used
Canon 7D Mark II, Canon 500 mm II f/4 + 1.4x
Oops, I posted my first reply before I saw this shot. You can understand why the early natives gave these birds a spiritual presence. When you watch their tail movement when they fly, you can understand where the "feathered serpent" came from.
