This endemic is the smallest bird in NZ. This bird was using the nest box provided in a small wooded area near Kaikoura, part of field study by the University of Canterbury.

This is the nominate race. Measures 7-9 cm. (the male is smaller than the female), and the male weighs ca. 6 grams, the female ca. 7 grams.
 
Never heard of these before, I thought it was a nickname for them at first.

A bonny pair.
